The shares of Newmont Corporation (NYSE:NEM) are up 0.8% at $61.70 at last check. And while the gold mining company has cooled off from its Aug. 5 all-time-high of $72.22, the security is still up 63.3% year-over-year. Even better news is that the stock's latest pullback has it near a historically bullish trendline, which could help NEM shine even brighter in the coming weeks.

More specifically, NEM just came within one standard deviation of its 160-day moving average, after spending the last few months above the trendline. According to data from Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White, four similar signals have occurred during the past three years. More often than not, the equity enjoyed positive returns one month after each signal, averaging a roughly 11.8% gain. From Newmont stock's current perch, a move of similar magnitude would put it just shy of $69 -- at another record peak.

NEM

An unwinding of pessimism in the options pits could send the security higher. This is per NEM's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) of 1.15, which sits in the highest percentile of its annual range -- suggesting short-term options traders have rarely been more put-biased.

For those wanting to weigh in on Newmont stock's next move, options may be the right play. The stock's Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 40% sits higher than just 22% of readings in its annual range, suggesting short-term options are pricing in relatively low volatility expectations.

Beverage concern Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) is scheduled to report third-quarter earnings before the market opens on Thursday, Oct. 22. The security has struggled in the face of the pandemic, with the company announcing it would be pulling its coconut water brand from stores and reviewing other beverages, as well. Below, we'll take a look at Coca-Cola stock's technical setup, as well as its earnings history.

KO was cruising into 2020, but promptly shed almost half its value during the height of the mid-March COVID-19 selloff. It's been a long road back, with the $51 emerging as resistance, and the shares' 100-day moving average containing any pullbacks in recent months. The $50 level is also an area to watch, as it coincides with its -10% year-to-date level.

Daily Stock Chart KO

Pessimism is growing in the options pits, where puts are popular. This is per KO's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) of 1.27, which sits in the highest percentile of its annual range -- meaning short-term options traders have rarely been more put-biased.

Traders looking to speculate on KO's near-term trajectory should consider options. The stock's Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 27% is in the 20th percentile of its annual range, suggesting short-term options are pricing in relatively low volatility expectations. In other words, Coca-Cola stock's near-term options are attractively priced at the moment.

For the stock's earnings history, KO has closed higher the day after the company reported earnings in six of the past eight quarters, including a 6.1% jump in July 2019 and a 3.2% pop this January. Over the past two years, shares have swung an average of 3.6% the day after earnings, regardless of direction. This time around, the options market is pricing in a slightly higher swing of 4.4%,

Pinterest Inc (NYSE:PINS) just opened to an all-time high of $50.90 this morning, surging on a double upgrade from BofA Global Research, which lifted its rating to "buy" from "neutral," and hiked its price target to $58 from $45. The analyst cited sector peer Snap's (SNAP) blowout earnings report, which it saw as a sign that the online advertising space in on the mend. At last glance, PINS is trading up 13% at $51.22.

This bull gaps has PINS effectively toppling a recent ceiling at the $46 mark, and puts the security on track for its fifth monthly win. The equity has been on a roll since gapping back above the $28 mark in August, with several layers of support leading it higher, including the 40- and 10-day moving averages. For the year, Pinterest stock now boasts an impressive 173.2% lead.

Circling back to analyst sentiment. A number of those in coverage haven't yet warmed up to the equity, leaving the door wide open for others to follow BofA Global Research's lead. Coming into today, nine of the 20 in coverage still consider the equity a "hold." Plus, the 12-month consensus price target of $42.23 is an 18.3% discount to current levels.

Options are already flying off the shelves, with 81,000 calls and 23,000 puts exchange within the first hour of trading. The weekly 10/23 51- and 50-strike calls are the most popular, and it appears positions are being sold to open at both.

Meanwhile, short sellers are likely kicking rocks today. Short interest has skyrocketed during the last two reporting periods, up 40.5%. The 20.45 million shares sold short make up a hefty 23.7% of PIN's available float, and would take a little over a day to cover, at the equity's average pace of trading.

Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE:CMG) is a wildly popular Mexican-style restaurant originally based out of Colorado most well-known for its build-it-yourself burritos and dishes. Since its creation in 1993, Chipotle has expanded its locations all across the U.S., as well as other countries including Canada, the U.K, France, and Germany. CMG stock has grown approximately 57% year-to-date, and CMG stock has more than tripled since hitting its 52-week low of $415. CMG stock is currently nearing its Sept. 2 all-time high of $1384.46. Moreover, the CMG stock will be looking to continue its significant growth today after the company reports its earnings after the bell today.

Let's dive into the fundamentals behind this company that have not been discussed in our Chipotle breakdown earlier this week. Chipotle has a market cap of $37.71 billion and a book value of $60.95 per share. The company's price-to-book ratio stands at 21.98. Chipotle has a trailing price-earnings ratio of 148.52 and a forward price-earnings ratio of 64.10.

Chipotle has beat expectations on all four of its most recent quarterly earnings reports.  In the most recent quarter that has been reported, the company beat their target by $0.05. They reported an earnings per share (EPS) of $0.40 instead of the expected $0.35. For the upcoming earnings report, Chipotle is expected to report an EPS of $3.40, resuming CMG stock's upward trajectory after a huge dip in the second quarter of this year. In the third quarter of 2019, Chipotle reported its best quarter in 12 months. The company surpassed earnings expectations in a major way with a reported EPS of $3.82, beating expectations by $0.60. Chipotle has a trailing 12-month EPS of $9.02.

Revenue from Chipotle has grown on an annual basis since 2016 by at least $300 million per year. The company is unlikely to grow revenue at that same rate this year, but might still manage to retain or demonstrate slight growth given the pandemic-related circumstances. In 2019, Chipotle grew revenue by more than $700 million. Chipotle has also maintained its revenue consistently over the last four quarters despite the on-going pandemic.

The company’s net income has also demonstrated consistent growth over last four years. Chipotle had major net income growth in 2017 and 2019. The company grew its net income by more than $150 million in 2017, and by about $125 million in 2019. However, over the past 4 quarters, Chipotle has reported a general decline in net income.

Chipotle currently has $906.66 million in cash and $3.01 billion in total debt. The company’s balance sheet holds $5.37 billion in total assets and $3.666 billion in total liabilities. Chipotle's total equity stands at $1.71 billion.

Chipotle has done surprisingly well as far as earnings go over the past 2 quarters despite the virus outbreak. It can only be assumed that 2020 could have been an incredible year of revenue growth for the company had it not been for COVID-19. Investors looking to buy CMG stock stock will potentially have that growth to look forward to in the future. Chipotle’s balance sheet isn’t amazing, but it is very manageable. The big problem for investors right now is that CMG's stock price just isn’t justifiable. CMG stock may continue growing, but it won’t yield enough of a return for it to be worth the investment at this time. There are simply better deals on the market right now.
