The shares of Bristol-Myers Squibb Co (NYSE:BMY) are down 1.7% at $57.73 at last check. And while the pharmaceutical name carries a 10% year-to-date deficit, investors should not turn their backs on BMY just yet. That is because the stock's recent pullback has it near a historically bullish trendline, which could push the security higher in the near future.

More specifically, BMY just came within one standard deviation of its 320-day moving average, after spending months above this trendline. According to data from Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White, three similar signals have occurred during the past three years. Without fail, the security enjoyed positive returns one month after each signal, averaging a 8.1% gain. From its current perch, a move of similar magnitude would put BMY above the $62 mark -- close to its October peak.

BMY

An unwinding of pessimism in the options pits could create additional tailwinds for the security. This is per the stock's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR), which stands higher 81% of readings from the past year. In other words, short-term option traders have rarely been more put-biased.

Now seems like the right time to weigh in of BMY options. The security's Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 34%, which sits in the low 24th percentile of all other annual readings, meaning the stock sports attractively priced premiums at the moment.

Software giant Zscaler Inc (NASDAQ:ZS) has far from struggled over the long term. From a technical view, the equity boasts a 214% year-to-date lead, and is now trading at more than nine times its initial public offering (IPO) price of $16. However, the shares have recently pulled back, making now an opportune time to buy calls.

ZS Oct 28

Meanwhile, shorts look to be in covering mode on the equity. Specifically, short interest fell 4.5% during the last two reporting periods, and now accounts for more than 10% of the stock’s total available float. Even further, there looks to be room for upgrades, with seven covering brokerages firms sporting a tepid "hold."

Turning toward options, this bearish sentiment is echoed. This is per ZS’ Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) of 1.09, which stands higher 64% of readings from the past year. In other words, short-term option traders have rarely been more put-biased.

Lastly, now looks like an affordable time bet on Zscaler stock with options. This is per the stock's Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 48%, which sits higher than just 10% of all other annual readings. What’s more, ZS’ Schaeffer's Volatility Scorecard (SVS) ranks at a high 78 out of 100, meaning the security has tended to exceed these expectations during the past year -- a boon for premium buyers. Our recommended call has a leverage ratio of 4.9 and will double in value on a 21.1% rise in the underlying equity.

At least five analysts have chimed in with bull notes since yesterday's announcement that Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will buy competitor Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX) in a $35 billion all-stock deal. Already this morning, Citigroup and Deutsche Bank lifted their price targets, to $136 and $143, respectively, while J.P. Morgan upgraded the equity to "neutral" from "underweight" and upped its price target to $138 from $96. XLNX, this morning, has gone by the way of the broader market, off 2.6% at $121.18, at last check.

While the equity may be cooling from yesterday's annual high of $130.40, it's still trading at its highest levels in over a year, with former pressure at the $120 mark looking like potential support going forward. For the year, XLNX is now up 24%.

A look at analyst sentiment coming into today shows that many members of the brokerage bunch still aren't convinced. Of the 15 in coverage, only three considered it a "buy" or better. Plus, the 12-month consensus price target of $119.47 is at a slight discount to current levels.

The options pits have been quite bearish of late, too. In fact, at the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX). XLNX sports a 10-day put/call volume ratio of 1.29, which stands higher than 95% of readings from the past year. This suggests a healthier-than-usual appetite for long puts of late.

The shares of Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) are down 1.7%, last seen trading at $152.64, after the Dow name posted adjusted third-quarter losses of $1.39 per share, which were smaller than Wall Street's estimated $2.52 per share. Revenue also beat forecasts, while Boeing announced a 130,000 workforce target.

To say it's been a rough year for Boeing stock is an understatement. The equity has shed 53.3% in 2020,and now its 150-day moving average has reemerged as layer of resistance, despite BA trading above the trendline for much of October. Plus, the $170 level has kept a lid on rally attempts since early September. Despite this, the security has managed to tack on 9.1% over the last six months.

Options data from the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX) shows calls have been popular over the last 10 weeks. This is shown in BA's 50-day call/put volume ratio of 2.46, which ranks in the 96th percentile of its annual range, which suggests the appetite for bullish bets has been much healthier than usual.

Now looks to be an ideal time to enter with options, too. Boeing stock's Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 58% sits in the 18th percentile of all other readings from the past year -- a boon for premium buyers.

Texas Roadhouse, Inc. (NASDAQ:TXRH) is an American restaurant chain specializing in steaks and American cuisine. The company has locations in several Middle Eastern and Asian countries, as well as the U.S. and Mexico. TXRH is up almost 20% year-to-date ahead of its expected earnings report today after the close. As Election Day uncertainty and COVID-19 fears continue to shake up the market, many restaurant stocks will be looking stand out from the rest. TXRH is only a few days removed from its Oct. 20 all-time high of $76.10, a marker that signals a triple bounce off its March 18 six-year bottom near $25.

Texas Roadhouse has a market cap of $4.82 billion and a book value of $12.51 per share. Its price-to-book ratio stands at 6.04. The company has a trailing price-earnings ratio of 84.83 and a forward price-earnings ratio of 31.45. The current price-earnings ratio is 78.18.

Texas Roadhouse has beat expectations on three of the most recent four earnings reports. In the most recent quarter, the company beat their target by $0.15. In the first quarter of 2020, Texas Roadhouse missed expectations by a pretty significant margin of $0.35 in EPS. For the upcoming earnings report today, Texas Roadhouse is expected to report an EPS of $0.18, which would signal a shift back into profitability. The company has a current trailing 12-month EPS of $0.89.

Texas Roadhouse grew its revenue annually from 2016 to 2019 by more than $200 million. The company managed an approximate 11% growth in revenue over this period In 2019, Texas Roadhouse increased revenue by nearly $300 million, making it one of the company’s best years in terms of revenue in recent times. Over the past 12 months, the company has reported a combined revenue of $2.51 billion, which is $250 million less than the $2.77 billion produced in 2019.

Texas Roadhouse posted a steady increase in net income between 2016 and 2019, as well. During this time period, the company reported a more than 50% increase in net income. Texas Roadhouse averaged a net income increase of about $15 million per year, with the exception of 2018. In 2018, the company increased net income by more than $26 million. Texas Roadhouse has experienced a significant decrease in net income over the past 12 months. The company has only produced $61.69 million, compared to the $174.4 million produced in 2019. This represents a decrease of about $112 million, or 65%.

Texas Roadhouse currently has $282.49 million in cash and $817.57 billion in total debt. The company’s balance sheet holds $2.13 billion in total assets and $1.26 billion in total liabilities. Texas Roadhouse's total equity stands at $868 million.

Despite the company operating in one of the most heavily impacted sectors of the economy, Texas Roadhouse has shown stability throughout 2020. The company has only taken losses in the first quarter of this year, so far. Texas Roadhouse also has a very manageable balance sheet along with a great record of consistent revenue and net income growth. However, the new spike in COVID-19 cases has Texas Roadhouse and other "reopening" stocks facing a longer recovery than company had expected.

TXRH stock currently trades at a pretty high price when one closely considers the inflated price-earnings ratio of 78.18. TXRH stock's forward price-earnings ratio shows more promise, but may be deceptive if the pandemic continues to worsen. Unless the company beats earnings in a major way, TXRH stock is likely to show some weakness in the short-term. Texas Roadhouse is a stock to keep an eye on as a long-term investment at the right price. Investors may consider jumping into this stock at a better price, looking at under $45 per share.

Caterpillar is a Solid Pick During Uncertain Times

by Schaeffer's Digital Content Team

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT) is the world’s largest manufacturer of heavy equipment such as engines, construction and mining equipment. The American company also owns countless brands across the globe. Furthermore, the company's quarterly report yesterday, Oct. 27,  likely has investors searching for the tale of the tape. As of today, CAT stock is up about 7% year-to-date. CAT stock has nearly doubled since tapping its 52-week low of $87.50.

Caterpillar has a market cap of $88.37 billion and a book value of $25.36 per share. The company's price-to-book ratio stands at 6.69. Caterpillar has a trailing price-earnings ratio of 22.65 and a forward price-earnings ratio of 23.42. The company's trailing 12-month price-earnings ratio is 21.80.

Caterpillar has grown its total revenue annually in 2016, 2017, and 2018. In 2017, the company increased revenue by nearly $7 billion, or roughly 18%. Caterpillar increased its revenue to $45.46 billion in 2017. In the following year, 2018, Caterpillar increased revenue by more than $9 billion, or about 20%. The company had $54.72 billion in revenue that year. In 2019, though, Caterpillar saw a 1.67% decline in 2019. The company lost just under $1 billion in revenue last year. Caterpillar has produced $46.53 billion in revenue over the past 12 months and is on track to post significant annual revenue loss in 2020.

Caterpillar reported a significant increase in net income between 2016 and 2018. The company went from taking a net loss of $67 million to producing over $6 billion in profit. In 2019, the company maintained its net income. Caterpillar will likely be reducing its net income by $2-3 billion in 2020, but will likely still produce a substantial positive net income.

Caterpillar currently has $8.8 billion in cash and $38.65 billion in total debt. The company’s balance sheet holds $76.57 billion in total assets and $62.79 billion in total liabilities. Caterpillar's total equity stands at $13.78 billion.

The company has paid dividends consistently since 1989, and has steadily grown its dividend since 1992, making CAT stock a very desirable dividend stock. Caterpillar last paid a dividend of $1.03 per share. The company has 2.44% dividend yield, and will have paid $4.12 to investors in 2020.

Caterpillar has reported a drop in sales and a considerable drop in revenue this year, but has maintained a good price-earnings ratio of 21.80. The company is expected to boost its overall sales over the next 12 months, and the stock will continue to climb after the company resumes share buy-backs. Caterpillar stock also comes with 2.4% dividend yield and a very manageable balance sheet. Overall, the company is a safe investment for long-term dividend growth as well as good potential stock growth. Caterpillar is undoubtedly undervalued at the moment, but might yet present a better value with the continued uncertainty in the market that continues driving stock prices down.

  • Quantitative Analysis

The shares of Home Depot Inc (NYSE: HD) are up 0.7% at $278.20 at last check. And while the home improvement stock is now cooling off from its Aug. 27, all-time-high of $292.95, the last week's 2.7% pullback has it near a historically bullish trendline, which could push HD even higher in the near future.

More specifically, Home Depot stock just came within one standard deviation of its 80-day moving average, after spending several weeks above this trendline. According to data from Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White, four similar signals have occurred during the past three years. The security enjoyed positive returns one month after each signal, averaging a 6.4% gain. From the stock's current perch, a move of similar magnitude would put HD right at the $296 mark -- at yet another record high.

HD 80 Day

An unwinding of pessimism in the options pits could also push the security higher. This is per HD's 10-day put/call volume ratio of 1.01 at the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX), which sits in the 88th percentile of its annual range. In simpler terms, this suggests a healthier-than-usual appetite for bearish bets of late.

Now certainly seems like a good time to take advantage of HD options. The security's Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 35%, which sits in the low 20th percentile of all other annual readings, meaning the stock sports attractively priced premiums at the moment. Plus, the equity's Schaeffer's Volatility Scorecard (SVS) ranks relatively high at 75 out of 100, meaning HD has tended to exceed these expectations during the past year -- a boon for premium buyers.
