To say it's been an unusual time for the airline sector would be an understatement, and this round of earnings, in particular, is giving investors an idea of the temperature of the flight space. One sector member receiving generally positive response this morning is JetBlue Airways Corporation (NASDAQ:JBLU). The stock was surging in pre-market trading, and is now up 2.9% at $15.10, after the company posted fourth-quarter losses that were slimmer than analysts' estimates, and revenue that beat expectations. The company added that it expects more softness during the current quarter, though its cash burn improved significantly, coming in on the lower end of its $6 to $8 million guidance range at $6.7 million.

A deeper look at JBLU's price performance shows the stock has been middling for the past few months, trading in a narrow channel between the $14 and $16 regions since an early November bear gap. While the equity remains smack dab in the middle of these two levels, support at the 60-day appears to be guiding the shares higher, keeping JBLU at a nine-month lead of over 50%.

Analysts are still hesitant on JetBlue stock. Of the 13 in coverage, only four call it a "strong buy," compared to seven "hold" ratings and two "strong sells." What's more, the 12-month consensus price target of $15.53 is a slim 2.2% premium to last night's close.

In the options pits, however, calls are king. In fact, in the past two weeks, 8.69 calls were picked up for every put at the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX). This ratio stands higher than 87% of readings from the past year, suggesting long calls have rarely been more popular.

Today's options activity paints a similar picture. So far, 5,749 calls have crossed the tape -- triple the intraday average -- compared to just 440 puts. The February 18 call is the most popular, followed by the 16 call in the same series.

Every day for the next two weeks, we're going to highlight one of Schaeffer's top 14 picks for 2021. Up today a underrated software stock. To access the entirety of the 2021 report, click here.

Software stock Datadog Inc. (NASDAQ:DDOG) recently broke out of a weekly flag pattern after quickly dipping below –and then regaining -- its 20-week moving average. This trendline was strong support during the broad-market selloff in September and could prove to be a springboard once again in 2021. With a year-over-year revenue growth at roughly 62.5% and the company free cash flow positive already, there is reason to believe Datadog stock has room to run.

A short squeeze could keep the wind at DDOG's back. The stock continued to rise in the face of short interest increasing toward all-time high levels. A healthy 8.7% of DDOG's total available float is sold short, and at the stock's average pace of trading, it would take more than three days for shorts to buy back their bearish bets. A shift in analyst sentiment is overdue as well. Of the 18 brokerages covering DDOG, 10 maintain a tepid "hold" stance.

Meanwhile, DDOG premium is affordably priced, which could draw more buyers to the table. This is according to the security's SVI of 56%, which sits in the 7th percentile of all other annual readings, which means options traders are pricing in relatively low volatility expectations at the moment. Plus, the equity's Schaeffer's Volatility Scorecard (SVS) sits at 88 (out of 100), meaning the stock has greatly exceeded option traders' volatility expectations during the past year.

Online travel specialist Expedia Group Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) recently flagged into its 20-day moving average, as well as its $20 billion market cap. In addition, EXPE is retesting a breakout above its 2018 and 2019 highs. Now, the stock is up 20% year-over-year -- an area that could be supportive -- so it looks like the perfect time to bet on Expedia stock's next move higher.

Analysts, meanwhile, are hesitant toward the security. Of the 31 in coverage, just 12 sport a "buy" or better rating, with the rest saying "hold" or worse. Plus, the 12-month consensus price target of $127.96 is a 6.6% discount to current levels.

Short interest has rolled over from five-year highs and shorts are in covering mode. In fact, short interest is off 21.2% in the most recent reporting period, and the 13.05 million shares sold short represent a healthy 11.1% of the stock's available float

Lastly, premiums look attractive on EXPE at the moment, according to its Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 52%. That ranks in the extremely low 12th percentile of its annual range. Our recommended call has a leverage ratio of 5.1, and will double in value on a rise of 19.6% in the underlying security.

  • Quantitative Analysis

The shares of Freeport-McMoRan Inc (NYSE:FCX) are down 4.4% at $25.83 at last check, though the stock's earlier pullback was caught by long-term support at the 60-day moving average. Today's negative price action comes after two minor price-target cuts, with both Deutsche Bank and RBC lowering their price objectives by a dollar to $32 and $31, respectively. However, there is reason to believe that FCX could move back up on the charts.

More specifically, the stock just came within one standard deviation of its 40-day moving average, after spending most of 2020 well above this trendline. According to data from Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White, six similar signals have occurred during the past three years. One month after each signal, FCX was positive 83% of the time, averaging a swing of 15%. From its current perch, a move of similar magnitude would put the stock just shy of the $29 mark, closer to its Jan. 14 seven-year high of $32.48.

FCX Jan 27

Though the brokerage bunch is leaning bullish, there is still room for upgrades. Out of the 11 analysts in coverage, four carry a tepid "hold" rating on Freeport-McMoRan stock.

Lastly, now seems like a decent time to weigh in on FCX's next move with options. The security's Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 56% sits in just the 9th percentile of its annual range, meaning the stock is currently sporting attractively priced premiums.
