  • The Week Ahead

Kicking off in the middle of the earnings season, the first week of May will be a busy one for Wall Street. Among the multiple economic indicators that are on the schedule, traders will be paying special attention to trade deficit data, a fresh ADP employment report, the Markit manufacturing and services purchasing managers' indexes (PMI), jobless claims, and nonfarm payrolls. The earnings docket is packed, too, with reports from the likes of Chegg (CHGG), Etsy (ETSY), Cloudflare (NET), Fastly (FSLY), Lyft (LYFT) and Pfizer (PFE).

Below is a list of key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All economic dates listed below are tentative and subject to change.

There will be no shortage of economic indicators on Monday, May 3, as investors look ahead to the final Markit manufacturing PMI, as well as the ISM manufacturing index. Plus, construction and motor vehicles sales (SAAR) data  is set to come out.

Tuesday, May 4, will be quieter, with only trade deficit data and factory orders on tap.

On Wednesday, May 5, much of the attention will shift to the latest ADP employment report. The day also brings the Markit services PMI, as well as the ISM services index.

A fresh round of initial and continuing jobless claims is due out on Thursday, May 6. Additionally, data on productivity and unit labor costs is scheduled for release as well.

Finally, Friday, May 7, features nonfarm payrolls, an update on the unemployment rate, and average hourly earnings. Wholesales inventories and consumer credit data is also due out.

The weekly and expiring 4/30 3,600-strike call is by far the most popular, followed by the 3,550-strike call in the same series, with new positions being opened at the latter. The shares of Western Digital Corp (NASDAQ:WDC) are up 4% at $73.96 this morning, after the company shared fiscal third-quarter profits of $1.02 per share on revenue of $4.14 billion, with both its top and bottom lines handily topping analysts' expectations. Many brokerage firms are responding in turn. Already, Western Digital stock has received no less than 11 price-target hikes, including a lofty one from Susquehanna to $125.

Most members of the brokerage bunch were already optimistic on WDC coming into today. Of the 21 in coverage, 16 considered the stock a "buy" or better, with not a single "sell" rating to be seen. Plus, the 12-month consensus price target sat at $83.44 -- a 17.3% premium to last night's close.

Similar bullishness can be ascribed to the options pits, where a whopping 8.51 calls have been picked up for every put at the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX). This ratio stand higher than 91% of readings from the past 12 months, meaning this penchant for long calls is unusual.

It's been a choppy couple months for WDC on the charts, with several brutal rejections occurring at the $72 region since early March. The ascending 60-day deftly captured two of these dramatic pullbacks, however, and for the year, WDC still boasts an impressive 28.4% lead. Plus, today's pop puts WDC back within a hair of its April 7, two-year high of $74.66.

The shares of CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) have faced continued pressure at the $78 region, making a few attempts to topple the ceiling over the last few years, including on April 21, when the stock rose to $77.44 -- its highest level since late 2018. Pullbacks have followed each attempt, but despite the up-and-down year, CVS still boasts an 11.3% rise in 2021. This most recent pullback saw the equity find a floor at $75, and what's more, a historically bullish technical signal just started flashing on the charts, which could send CVS toppling this aforementioned pressure near the $78 level.

According to data from Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White, CVS just came within one standard deviation of its 40-day moving average. Within the past three years, seven similar signals have occurred, with the equity higher one month later in 71% of those instances, averaging a 21-day gain of 5.4%. At CVS's current perch of $76.06, a similar move would put it at $80.17 -- marking a fresh three-year high.

CVS Chart April 29

A shift in the options pits could provide additional tailwinds for the stock. At the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX), CVS sports a 50-day put/call volume ratio that stands higher than 76% of all other readings from the last year, implying a healthier-than-usual appetite for bearish bets of late.

Echoing this, the stock's a Schaeffer's open interest ratio (SOIR) of 0.54 sits in the elevated 85th percentile of its annual range. This suggests short-term traders have rarely been more put-biased.

Right now, options look like a prudent play when weighing CVS's next move. The stock's Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 25% stands higher than just 19% of all other annual readings, meaning options players are pricing in relatively low volatility expectations at the moment.
