Quaker Chemical Stock Moves Lower Ahead of Earnings

by Schaeffer's Digital Content Team

Quaker Chemical Corp (NYSE:KWR) is down 3.4% to trade at $188.69 at last check, and earlier hit a roughly annual low of $189.50. This negative price action comes ahead of the company's fourth-quarter earnings report, due out after today's close. Below, we will dive into KWR's technical setup, in addition to its previous post-earnings activity.

Digging deeper, the equity today breached a familiar floor at the $195 level, which had been supporting the shares since late January. Additionally, the security is now pacing for its fifth-straight daily loss, guided lower by the 30-day moving average. Year-over-year, KWR carries a 35.7% deficit.

KWR 30 Day

The equity has a generally positive history of post-earnings reactions, finishing five of eight next-day sessions higher over the past two years, including a 10% jump in May 2020. Options traders are pricing in a 7.5% swing for KWR this time around, which is higher than the 4.4% move it averaged following its last eight reports, regardless of direction.

Shorts have been piling on the security ahead of the event. In fact, short interest added 5.3% in the most recent reporting period, and the 1.48 million shares sold short account for 11% of KWR's available float, or nearly five weeks' worth of pent-up buying power.

The options pits are similarly pessimistic. This is per the equity's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) of 3.05, which sits in the 80th percentile of annual readings. This suggests short-term options traders have rarely been more put-biased in the past 12 months.

From a fundamental point of view, Quaker stock has a relatively high valuation, trading at a forward price-earnings ratio of 24.81, and a price-sales ratio of 2.18. The chemical company's balance sheet is also weak, with only $136.79 million in cash and roughly $926 million in total debt.

However, KWR's revenues are up 96% since 2018, while net income is up 155%, after experiencing a 47% decline in net income for 2019. The company has also increased its trailing 12-month revenues and net income by 20% and 282%, respectively, since 2020.

Plus, Quaker Chemical stock has analysts estimating revenue growth of 7.1%, and earnings growth of 14.56% for 2022. This potentially set ups KWR as an option from a long-term growth and value perspective, should its price continue falling in the short-term.

  • The Week Ahead

March will definitely be coming in like a lion next week, with plenty of economic indicators on deck and a few corporate earnings still trickling in, too. A deluge of jobs data will keep investors busy, as Wall Street sifts through February's ADP employment report and nonfarm payrolls for clues on how the workforce is recovering from this winter's omicron variant. Several important inflation readings will also be on tap, including the Chicago purchasing managers' index (PMI), and the final Markit manufacturing PMI.

Earning season is finally winding down, but not before reports are released by AMC Entertainment (AMC), American Eagle (AEO), AutoZone (AZO), Best Buy (BBY), BJ's Wholesale (BJ), Dollar Tree (DLTR), Domino's Pizza (DPZ), Hostess Brands (TWNK), Kohl's (KSS), Kroger (KR), Lucid Motors (LCID), Nordstrom (JWN), Novavax (NVAX), Salesforce.com (CRM), Target (TGT), Urban Outfitters (URBN), and Zoom Video (ZM).

Below is a list of key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All economic dates listed below are tentative and subject to change.

The final day of the month, Monday, Feb. 28, will bring trade in goods data and the Chicago PMI.

Investors will transition into the new month with data on construction spending on Tuesday, March 1. The ISM manufacturing index and the Markit manufacturing PMI are also due out.

The Federal Reserve's beige book will come out on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 2, while the ADP employment report will be out bright and early that day.

Thursday, March 3 is set to be a busy one, with initial and continuing jobless claims, as well as the fourth quarter's productivity revision and unit labor costs revision data all out before the bell. Following the market's open, February's Markit services PMI will be released, followed by the ISM services index, data on factory orders, and core capital equipment orders.

The week will wrap up on Friday, March 4 and feature nonfarm payrolls data, the unemployment rate, average hourly earnings, the labor force participation rate, and info on consumer credit.

Live Nation Entertainment Inc (NYSE:LYV) announced a mixed fourth-quarter report after the close yesterday. While revenue beat estimates, the company's losses of 86 cents per share were greater than the losses of 54 cents anticipated by analysts. To follow, J.P. Morgan Securities raised its price target to $130 from $117, while Guggenheim adjusted its price objective to $140 from $134. At last glance, LYV was reversing its earlier losses, up 7.1% at $121.37, even as the broad-market selloff adds pressure in the background.

LYV had a choppy last few months on the charts, though the $100 level provided a consistent floor for the furthest pullbacks. Today, the stock's 90-day moving average captured its earlier retreat, and the equity is now on track for its fourth-straight weekly win. Year-to-date, the security hovers near breakeven.

An unwinding of short interest could send LYV higher still. Shorts have been building their positions, and the 15.71 million shares sold short account for 10.4% of the stock's available float, or nearly seven days worth of pent-up buying power.

Meanwhile, the options pits are more pessimistic than usual today, with puts running at three times what's typically seen. So far, 890 puts and 760 calls have crossed the tape. The March 90 put is seeing the most activity, followed by the March 100 put.

Papa John's Int'l, Inc. (NASDAQ:PZZA) just left the earnings confessional with fourth-quarter profits and revenue that topped analysts' estimates. The company's gross margin also improved despite recent labor shortages and commodity market issues, and its same-store sales rose over 11%. At last check, the stock was down 0.8% at $105.66.

Papa John's stock has reclaimed most of this morning's steeper losses, amid the broad-market selloff, but is still on track for its seventh-straight daily loss. PZZA has been on a downward spiral of late, and breached the 320-day moving average during yesterday's trading, marking its first close below the trendline in nearly two years. The stock is clinging to a small year-over-year lead, though it has lost over 20% in 2022.

Analysts have yet to comment, but most members of the brokerage bunch are bullish. Of the 14 in coverage, 10 say "strong buy." Plus, the 12-month consensus price target of $145 is a 38.7% premium to current levels.

Short-term options traders, on the other hand, were extremely put-biased ahead of the event. This is per PZZA's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) of 1.50, which stands higher than 97% of readings from the past year.

Subscribers to Chart of the Week received this commentary on Sunday, February 27.

If you've been hanging on to every development in the geopolitical theater between Russia and Ukraine over the past month, you probably have whiplash right now. As an investor, it's difficult to glean much from any particular headline -- positive or negative -- because a less-than-constructive development could be right around the corner that throws a wrench in it all. This week's price action is evident of that.

One thing is for sure; financial markets are quite sensitive to brinksmanship. It doesn't take a Rhodes scholar to recognize that war=bad for stocks. But geopolitical posturing – and that's what Russia is doing -- has so many other ancillary effects that a cheat sheet of sorts could help investors articulate the cause-and-effect of every development. We're going to try to unpack the bigger ones below.

Let's get the obvious ones out of the way; safe-haven assets get gobbled up amid geopolitical tensions and gold futures are on track for their best weekly win in nine months, while the 10-year Treasury yield ticks below 1.95% at last check. You can also tie the VanEck Vectors Russia ETF (RSX) to U.S. indexes in that they both benefit from de-escalation. The RSX gained 5.8% on Feb. 15, following reports that Russian military units were returning to their bases after exercises near Ukraine. However, the index then shed 4.9% after the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations noted the conflict had reached a "crucial moment" and that Russia is moving toward "an imminent invasion. "

RSX has seen around $120 million inflows in the last two weeks, per ETFTrends.com. Around 40% of the fund's $1.4 billion in assets is dedicated to energy, with gas and oil representing about 16%-18% of the fund itself. Looking below at recent action at the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX), traders have mostly been buying to open RSX puts, with the 10-day put/call volume ratio coming in at 2.79 and ranking in the 81st percentile of its annual range. Per the chart below, you can see the pop in puts earlier in January coincides with U.S. and Russian officials meeting in Geneva for diplomatic talks, talks that subsequently broke down and have led to the current predicament.

RSX COTW pc

I want to amend my previous statement and say that war = bad*, with the asterisk for American defense stocks such as Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC), Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT), and General Dynamics Corporation (NYSE:GD) that typically enjoy tailwinds as war clouds gather. Since satellite imagery showed a fresh build-up of Russian troops along the Ukraine border on Nov. 1, NOC, LMT, and GD boast respective three-month returns of 12%, 13.8%, and 9.9%. In the last 50 days, bought-to-open calls have outnumbered puts by a nearly two-to-one ratio for all three of the defense stocks. However, options traders are paying a pretty penny for these names now, per their implied volatilities (IV) that all sit in middling percentiles of their annual ranges.

The U.S. has already declared it will block it’s not-yet-operational Nord Stream 2 pipeline should Russia advance into Ukraine. Although the energy sector has been resurgent in the last nine months, per the chart below, put traders have been crowding the broader Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) lately, despite its 22% year-to-date gain. Meanwhile, calls are popular among the specific United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG).

The reason why many pundits view potential U.S. sanctions against Russia as an ineffective negotiation tactic, is because Europe has become increasingly dependent on Russia for its natural gas. Should this dependence get squeezed, investors should be keen to see what steps up as a replacement, a decision that is sure to have a ripple-effect on the energy sector. Perhaps those UNG call buyers are reading the same tea leaves.

XLE COTW pc

The x-factor in this entire geopolitical mess is China, which has brazenly strengthened its alliance with Russia in recent months. Project-Syndicate summarized China's triangulation gambit, noting "this new marriage is convenient in both economic and geostrategic terms. Russia has the natural gas that an energy-hungry, coal-dependent, polluted China needs. And China, with its surplus savings, ample foreign capital, and its Belt and Road Initiative, offers Russia added clout to buttress its thinly-veiled territorial ambitions."

If a diplomatic breakthrough is not on the horizon, it could mean more strain to U.S-Sino relations. There's no clear view of what will happen and its impact on China-listed stocks stateside, but using options limits your capital at risk compared to stock trading. With some of the information above, pairing two diametrically opposed directional plays provides a built-in "hedge" against macro headwinds while simultaneously creating multiple possible paths to profit. In short, investors should consider options if and when the geopolitical floor shift beneath them.

Zscaler, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZS) is slated to release its second-quarter financial results after the market closes tomorrow, Feb. 24. Analysts currently anticipate that Zscaler’s earnings will come in at $0.11 per share in the upcoming earnings report. Ahead of the event ZS is up 1.3% at $258.21.

While ZS looks to have found footing at the $250 level, it's still feeling pressure from several moving averages including the 200-day, and a little further up the 120-day. The stock sports a year-to-date lead of 23.5%, but still suffers a 20.6% deficit for 2022.

Analysts are optimistic ahead of the event. Of the 23 in coverage, 19 call ZS a "buy" or better. Meanwhile, the 12-month consensus price target of $374.06 is a 45.1% premium to current levels.

A look at the company's financials shows that the cloud security company has maintained strong revenues and currently has a solid balance sheet with $1.58 billion in cash and $978 million in total debt. Zscaler's revenues have increased 300% since fiscal 2018 and its trailing 12-month revenues are currently up 13% since releasing fiscal 2021 results. In addition, Zscaler is estimated to see a 78.84% increase in earnings and a 34.6% increase in revenues next year.

Nonetheless, the stock is incredibly overvalued by most fundamental metrics. ZS trades at an extremely rich price-sales ratio of 45.98 and has an inflated forward price-earnings ratio 500.00, already pricing-in multiple years of expansion. Although the cloud security company is producing consistent and meaningful growth, the valuation is unreasonably high, making it likely for Zscaler stock to experience a significant drop in price.
