  • The Week Ahead

Next week will be a relatively quiet one as far as economic data goes, with wholesale inventories and the foreign trade deficit out early on. All the action will happen at once on Thursday, with a new round of inflation data to digest, courtesy of the core consumer price index (CPI). Investors will also get a glimpse at the Federal Reserve's budget deficit, and latest quarter's domestic nonfinancial debt and household wealth numbers that day as well.

There will only be a few corporate reports to sift through as earnings season settles, including those from Bumble (BMBL), Campbell Soup (CPB), CrowdStrike (CRWD), Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS), JD.com (JD), Oracle (ORCL), Petco Health and Wellness (WOOF), Poshmark (POSH), Stitch Fix (SFIX), Ulta Beauty (ULTA), and Wheaton Precious Metals (WPM).

Below is a list of key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All economic dates listed below are tentative and subject to change.

Monday, March 7, will bring consumer credit data.

The NFIB small-business index, data on the foreign trade deficit, and wholesale inventories are slated for Tuesday, March 8.

Job openings and quits are on tap for Wednesday, March 9

Thursday, March 10 will see initial and continuing jobless claims, the core CPI, information on real domestic nonfinancial debt for the fourth quarter, as well as the fourth quarter's real household wealth data. The Federal budget deficit will also be out later in the day.

On Friday, March 11 investors will wrap up the week with the University of Michigan consumer sentiment index, and five-year inflation expectations.

Latest Rundown of Underperforming 3M Stock

  • Best and Worst Stocks

Deere & Company (NYSE:DE) stock is up 10% year-to-date, but traders should tread lightly this month, as the farm equipment maker appears on Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White's list of 25 worst-performing S&P 500 Index (SPX) stocks for March. What's more, the company could be impacted by the Ukraine-Russia war via its partnership with engine manufacturer Cummins (CMI), which maintains an office in Moscow.

Last seen up 4.7% to trade at $375.34, Deere stock sits at fourth on White's list of SPX stocks that yield the worst returns this month, according to data going back 10 years. In the last decade, DE averaged a loss of 1.7%, and finished higher just twice. The equity is the worst industrial engineering stock to own, with sector-peer Caterpillar (CAT) also landing on the list albeit with much tamer losses.

Deere stock traded as low as $326.75 on Feb. 24, right around the $320-$330 range that has been tested now three times in the last 12 months, per the chart below. The shares have executed a nifty v-bottom pattern since then, but still remain below their post-earnings bear gap levels from Feb. 18.

Options traders have been focused on puts. Over the last 10 weeks, 1.13 puts were picked up for every call at the at the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX), a 50-day put/call volume ratio that stands higher than 99% of readings from the last year.

Logitech International SA (NASDAQ:LOGI) is down over 8% in 2022, and has shed 28.7% year-over-year. It looks like the equity is putting some distance between its current levels and its Feb. 24 annual low of $69.92, last seen up 3.2% at $76.88, and set for its first close atop the 10-day moving average since Feb. 15. Meanwhile, Logitech International does offer a dividend yield of 1.27% with its forward dividend at $0.95.

logi march 2

Yesterday, Wedbush upgraded the stock to "outperform" from "neutral," maintaining its $90 price target. There's plenty of room for bull notes. Of the five in coverage, only two analysts consider the stock a "strong buy."

Options traders have also been pessimistic. At the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX), LOGI sports a 50-day put/call volume ratio of 2.50, which stands higher than 92% of readings from the past year. In other words, puts have been picked up at a much quicker-than-usual clip during the past 10 weeks.

From a fundamental point of view, Logitech stock also provides a very appealing valuation given the tech company’s growth opportunity and performance in recent years. Logitech stock trades a forward price-earnings ratio of 15.85 and a price-sales ratio of 2.22.

LOGI also has an excellent balance sheet with $1.36 billion in cash and only $41.05 million in total debt. Moreover, the company has increased its trailing 12-month revenues and net income by 125% and 265%, respectively, since fiscal 2018. In addition, LOGI is estimated to grow its revenues 5.6% and its earnings 8.4% for fiscal 2022, making the stock an exciting option overall for value investors.

Nordstrom Inc (NYSE:JWN) stock is on track for its best day ever, up 31.5% to trade at $25.68 at last glance, after the retailer's better-than-expected fourth-quarter results and strong 2022 guidance. No fewer than five analysts lifted their price targets after the event, with three raising it to $30.

Analysts have yet to toss JWN an upgrade however, as they are still hesitant on the stock in terms of its consistency for the full year. Cowen and Company stated that it looks for steadiness in off-price channel as performance has been mixed. There is plenty of room for a shift in sentiment -- which could provide tailwinds -- as 10 of the 11 brokerages in coverage carry a "hold" or worse rating.

It's also worth noting that short interest represents 22.1% of the stock's available float. At JWN's average pace of trading, it would take over four days to buy back these bearish bets -- plenty of pent-up buying power.

Today's pop has Nordstrom stock at its highest level since its late November post-earnings bear gap, and further distancing itself from its Feb. 24, 14-month low of $18.65. However, the stock's 140-day moving average appears to be swooping in as overhead pressure. Year-to-date, JWN is up 14.9%.

Unsurprisingly, options traders are targeting the security at 28 times what's typically seen at this point, with 39,000 calls and 21,000 puts across the tape so far. The March 23 and 20 calls are the most popular, with new positions being bought to open at the weekly 3/4 30-strike call.

The shares of Dollar Tree, Inc. (NASDAQ:DLTR) are down 4.2% at $133.81 this morning, after the discount retailer shared a full-year sales forecast that came in below analyst expectations. The company cited supply shortages, labor costs, and rising inflation -- overshadowing a fourth-quarter earnings beat. Dollar Tree's revenue fell short of estimates as well.

While the stock boasts a 40% year-over-year lead, it slipped back below its year-to-date breakeven during yesterday's trading. The $144 level has kept a lid on shares, keeping DLTR from taking back its mid-November record high of $149.37. However, the equity still has support from several moving averages, including its 80-day trendline, which captured a pullback late last month.

Analysts have yet to chime in, though sentiment among the brokerage bunch has been mixed. Of the 19 in coverage, 10 say "buy" or better, and nine say "hold" or worse. Meanwhile, the 12-month consensus price target of $155.34 is an 11.2% premium to current levels.

Options traders took a much more bearish stance ahead of the earnings event. At the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX), DLTR sports a 10-day put/call volume ratio of 1.41, which sits in the 93rd percentile of its annual range, suggesting a much healthier-than-usual appetite for long puts of late.

Short-term options traders have had similarly put-heavy appetites. This is per DLTR's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) of 1.00, which stands higher than 73% of readings from the past 12 months.
