Earnings season will be picking back up this week with several blue chips
Despite Monday's market closure in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, it's shaping up to be a busy week ahead. For starters, traders can expect quarterly reports from blue chips American Express (AXP), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Procter & Gamble (PG), and Travelers (TRV). FAANG name Netflix (NFLX) will also step into the earnings arena. On the economic calendar, the Chicago Fed National Activity index will be scrutinized early in the week, while the Markit manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) will be released on Friday.

On Monday, Jan. 20, markets will be closed for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
On Tuesday, Jan 21 the economic calendar is looking sparse, but several big names will step into the earnings confessional, including IBM, Capital One Financial (COF), Haliburton (HAL), Las Vegas Sands (LVS), NFLX, TAL Education (TAL), TD Ameritrade (AMTD), and United Airlines (UAL).
Wednesday, Jan. 22, will bring data from the Chicago Fed National Activity Index, weekly crude inventories, and existing home sales. Earnings season will come roaring in with reports from Johnson & Johnson, Abbott Laboratories (ABT), Citrix Systems (CTXS), Fifth Third (FITB), Steel Dynamics (STLD), Teradyne (TER), and Texas Instruments (TXN).
Thursday, Jan. 23, will bring weekly jobless claims data, as well as the Conference Boards index of leading economic indicators for December. On the earnings docket will be Procter & Gamble, Travelers, Intel, American Airlines (AAL), Atlassian (TEAM), Comcast (CMCSA), E*TRADE Financial (ETFC), Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), Huntington Banc (HBAN), JetBlue Airways (JBLU), KeyCorp (KEY), Skyworks (SWKS), Southwest Air (LUV), and Union Pacific (UNP).
Data on the Markit manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) and the Markit's services PMI is due out on Friday, Jan. 24. For earnings, traders can expect reports from American Express, Hill-Rom (HRC), and Synovus Financial (SNV).
