Earnings are light, but there's plenty of economic data due out
The first full trading week of September features very little in the way of earnings, but plenty of economic data that should draw attention ahead of the Fed meeting later this month -- most notably, the latest reports on wholesale and consumer inflation from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Plus, retail sales, consumer sentiment, and jobs data will also hit the Street.
Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.
Things will kick off quietly on Monday, Sept. 10 with a morning speech from Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic and the Fed's consumer credit report in the afternoon. Hovnanian Enterprises (HOV) and Sonos (SONO) will report earnings.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), the NFIB small business optimism index, and wholesale trade data will headline the action. Francesca's (FRAN) and Farmer Brothers (FARM) will report earnings.
The weekly crude inventories report, producer price index (PPI), MBA mortgage index,
and the Fed's Beige Book are slated for Wednesday, Sept. 12. Oxford Industries (OXM), Pivotal Software (PVTL), and Tailored Brands (TLRD) are expected to release earnings.
Thursday, Sept. 13, is a busy day for economic data, with the consumer price index (CPI), weekly jobless claims, and the Treasury budget all expected. Plus, Bostic will speak on the economic outlook and monetary policy in Jackson, Mississippi. For earnings, Kroger (KR), Adobe Systems (ADBE), and Oracle (ORCL) are expected to report.
It's a busy close to the week, with monthly retail sales data headlining the action on Friday, Sept. 14. Traders should also stay tuned for import and export prices, industrial production numbers, business inventories, the preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment index, and the Baker-Hughes rig count. Additionally, Chicago Fed President Charles Evans will speak in the morning, while Dave & Buster's (PLAY) is scheduled to report earnings.
