The Week Ahead: Apple, Alphabet Highlight Earnings Storm; GDP in Focus

Tech favorites like Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Alphabet Inc (GOOGL) highlight a jam-packed week of earnings reports

The week's economic calendar will kick off with speeches from several Federal Reserve officials. Following the early week Fed buzz, traders will turn their focus to a number of key economic reports. Most notably, advance third-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) data is due for release on Friday.

Meanwhile, the earnings calendar is set for one of its busiest weeks in the quarter, with a slew of big names reporting. Among the earnings highlights will be reports from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), and Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR). Commodity stocks will also be in focus, with gold issues Barrick Gold Corporation (USA) (NYSE:ABX), Goldcorp Inc. (USA) (NYSE:GG), and Yamana Gold Inc. (USA) (NYSE:AUY) set to report, along with oil giants Chevron Corporaton (NYSE:CVX) and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM). 

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

Monday, October 24

The Markit purchasing managers manufacturing index (PMI) will kick off the week's economic reports. Speeches from central bank officials will also be in the spotlight, with New York Fed President William Dudley, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard, Chicago Fed President Charles Evans, and Federal Reserve Board Governor Jerome Powell all slated to speak. The week's earnings begin with Visa (V), Sohu.com (SOHU), Sonic (SONC), Swift Transportation (SWFT), and VF Corp (VFC).

Tuesday, October 25

The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller home price index and the Conference Board's consumer confidence survey are due for release Tuesday. Stepping up to the earnings plate will be Dow components 3M (MMM), AAPL, Caterpillar (CAT), DuPont (DD), Merck (MRK), Procter & Gamble (PG), and United Technologies (UTX). Additionally, AK Steel (AKS), AT&T (T), Capital One (COF), Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG), Corning (GLW), Discover Financial (DFS), Eli Lilly (LLY), Express Scripts (ESRX), Fiat Chrysler (FCAU), Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), General Motors (GM), JetBlue Airways (JBLU), Pandora Media (P), Panera Bread (PNRA), Sprint (S), Under Armour (UA), Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX), and Whirlpool (WHR) will report.

Wednesday, October 26

International trade data, new home sales, and weekly crude inventories are due out. Boeing (BA), Coca-Cola (KO), ABX, Biogen (BIIB), Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD), Comcast (CMCSA), F5 Networks (FFIV), GG, Groupon (GRPN), GrubHub (GRUB), Mondelez International (MDLZ), Newmont Mining (NEM), NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY), Southwest Airlines (LUV), Tesla Motors (TSLA),Texas Instruments (TXN), VMware (VMW), Western Digital (WDC), and Whiting Petroleum (WLL) will take their turns in the earnings confessional. 

Thursday, October 27

Durable goods order, weekly jobless claims, and pending home sales make up Thursday's economic reports.

Earnings reports on the docket include AMZN, AUY, Cabela's (CAB), Cirrus Logic (CRUS), ConocoPhillips (COP), Dow Chemical (DOW), Dr Pepper Snapple (DPS), Expedia (EXPE), Ford Motor (F), Fortinet (FTNT), GOOGL, GNC Holdings (GNC), LinkedIn (LNKD), Nokia (NOK), Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (POT), Starz (STRZA), TWTR, UPS (UPS), VASCO Data Security (VDSI). 

Friday, October 28

Advance third-quarter GDP data, the employment cost index (ECI), and the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index will round out the week's economic reports.

Finishing up the busy week of earnings are CVX, XOM, AbbVie (ABBV), Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD), Apollo Global Management (APO), Cabot Gas & Oil (COG), Hershey Foods (HSY), MasterCard (MA), Weyerhaeuser (WY), and Xerox (XRX).
