The Week Ahead: Blue Chips Step Up to the Earnings Mic

10 Dow stocks will report earnings next week, as will Netflix, Inc. (NFLX)

It's going to be a huge week on the earnings front, with one-third of the 30 Dow stocks slated to report quarterly results. Several other major companies will head to the earnings confessional, too, including Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX). Central bank chatter should also fill the air, with speeches from several Federal Reserve presidents on tap -- not to mention the release of inflation data and the Fed Beige Book.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

Monday, October 17

The week kicks off with the Empire State manufacturing survey and industrial production numbers. Plus, Fed Vice Chair Stanley Fischer is scheduled to speak. International Business Machines (IBM), Bank of America (BAC), NFLX, Hasbro (HAS) and IDEX Corporation (IEX), and United Continental (UAL) report earnings.

Tuesday, October 18

Tuesday's docket contains the consumer price index (CPI), the NAHB housing market index, and Treasury International Capital (TIC) data. Telling all in the earnings booth are Goldman Sachs (GS), Intel (INTC), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), UnitedHealth (UNH), BlackRock (BLK), Cree (CREE), Domino's Pizza (DPZ), Harley-Davidson (HOG), Intuitive Surgical (ISRG), and Philip Morris International (PM). 

Wednesday, October 19

Scheduled for Wednesday are housing starts, weekly crude inventories, the Fed Beige Book, and a speech from San Francisco Fed President John Williams. American Express (AXP), Citrix Systems (CTXS), eBay (EBAY), Halliburton (HAL), Mattel (MAT), Morgan Stanley (MS), Reynolds American (RAI), Seagate Technology (STX), St. Jude Medical (STJ), Steel Dynamics (STLD), and Xilinx (XLNX) are among the companies in the earnings lineup.

Thursday, October 20

Weekly jobless claims, the Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey, and existing home sales are due out Thursday. What's more, New York Fed President William Dudley will step behind the mic. Slated to report earnings are Microsoft (MSFT), Verizon Communications (VZ), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), American Airlines (AAL), athenahealth (ATHN), Dunkin Brands (DNKN), E*TRADE Financial (ETFC), Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB), PayPal (PYPL), PulteGroup (PHM), Quest Diagnostics (DGX), Schlumberger (SLB), and Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA).

Friday, October 21

There are no notable economic reports scheduled for Friday. However, General Electric (GE), McDonald's (MCD), and Honeywell International (HON) will hit the earnings confessional.
