The Week Ahead: Attention Turns to GDP; Plus, Retail, Solar Earnings

The earnings calendar centers on solar and retail stocks, while GDP data could move markets on Friday

While the earnings calendar will continue to slow next week, it will be far from barren. In particular, solar and retail stocks will flock to the earnings stage. There will be plenty of economic reports to digest, as well, punctuated by Friday's release of gross domestic product (GDP) data. Plus, all eyes will be on Fed Chair Janet Yellen, who's scheduled to speak on Friday morning.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

Monday, August 22

There are no notable economic reports slated for Monday. Scheduled to report earnings are NQ Mobile (NQ) and Zoe's Kitchen (ZOES).

Tuesday, August 23

New home sales will hit the Street on Tuesday. Stepping up to the earnings plate are Best Buy (BBY), Intuit (INTU), JM Smucker (SJM), La-Z-Boy (LZB), Nimble Storage (NMBL), Toll Brothers (TOL), Trina Solar (TSL), and Yingli Green Energy (YGE).

Wednesday, August 24

Markit's flash purchasing managers manufacturing index (PMI), existing home sales, and weekly crude inventories are due to be released on Wednesday. Express (EXPR), Guess (GES), HP Inc (HPQ), PVH Corp (PVH), ReneSola (SOL), Tilly's (TLYS), and Workday (WDAY) will hit the earnings confessional.

Thursday, August 25

On Thursday's docket are durable goods orders and weekly jobless claims. Major companies set to report earnings include Autodesk (ADSK), Dollar General (DG), Dollar Tree (DLTR), GameStop (GME), JinkoSolar (JKS), Medtronic (MDT), Signet Jewelers (SIG), Splunk (SPLK), Tiffany & Co. (TIF), and Ulta Salon (ULTA).

Friday, August 26

The week concludes with preliminary second-quarter GDP data, the international trade balance, and the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey. Plus, Fed Chair Janet Yellen will speak. Meanwhile, the earnings front will be relatively quiet.
