The Week Ahead: Retail Earnings, Sales Dominate Quiet Data Week

It's a quiet week of retail earnings ahead of the FOMC's highly anticipated mid-December meeting

It will be a fairly quiet week in terms of economic data and earnings reports, giving traders a bit of a breather ahead of the highly anticipated two-day Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting that kicks off on December 15. Among the short list of companies reporting earnings over the course of the week are many retailers -- and with the biggest shopping weekend of the year behind us, traders will likely be keeping a close eye on guidance for the crucial holiday quarter.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates. 

Monday, 12/7

The week begins on a quiet note, with only a speech from St. Louis Fed President James Bullard and the Fed's consumer credit report due out. Stepping into the earnings confessional will be H&R Block (HRB) and Mattress Firm (MFRM).

Tuesday, 12/8

The day's headline economic report will be the Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS). AeroVironment (AVAV), AutoZone (AZO), Costco (COST), Dave & Buster's Entertainment (PLAY), Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (KKD), Smith & Wesson (SWHC), and Toll Brothers (TOL) will report quarterly earnings.

Wednesday, 12/9

Weekly crude inventories are due out on Wednesday. Companies set to report earnings include Lululemon Athletica (LULU)Men's Wearhouse (MW), Ollie's Bargain Outlet (OLLI), and Vera Bradley (VRA).

Thursday, 12/10

Weekly jobless claims will be reported, along with import and export prices and the Treasury budget. Heading into the earnings booth will be Adobe Systems (ADBE), Ciena (CIEN), and Finisar (FNSR). 

Friday, 12/11

Many of the week's big data reports will hit the Street on Friday, with the producer price index (PPI), retail sales, business inventories, and the preliminary Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey due out. There are no major earnings reports scheduled.
