The Week Ahead: Fed Speaks Out Ahead of October Payrolls

Fed speeches and earnings from cult-favorite names will keep traders busy ahead of Friday's nonfarm payrolls release

October's nonfarm payrolls report is obviously the most hotly anticipated upcoming event, but there's plenty of other news to keep traders occupied until that late-week release -- including manufacturing data, auto sales, and speeches from a laundry list of Fed officials (including Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen and New York Fed President William Dudley).

Earnings season remains busy, though only two Dow components will report -- Visa (NYSE:V) steps up to the plate on Monday, while Walt Disney (DIS) takes the stage on Thursday. Beyond the blue chips, there are plenty of other notable names on deck; traders can look forward to the latest profit and revenue numbers from the likes of cult favorites like Facebook (FB), FireEye (FEYE), Herbalife (HLF), and Tesla Motors (TSLA).

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

Monday, 11/2

Monday's data lineup features the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) manufacturing index, Markit's purchasing managers manufacturing index (PMI), and construction spending.

Dow component Visa will report earnings on Monday, as will Allstate (ALL), American International Group (AIG), Avis Budget Group (CAR), Cardinal Health (CAH), Clorox (CLX), Coeur d'Alene Mines (CDE), Community Health Systems (CYH), Diamond Offshore Drilling (DO), Estee Lauder (EL), Fitbit (FIT), Loews Corp (L), Sysco (SYY), and Zillow (Z). 

Tuesday, 11/3

Factory orders, along with monthly auto and truck sales, are on Tuesday's news slate. Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Ariad Pharmaceuticals (ARIA), Cablevision (CVC), CBS (CBS), Devon Energy (DVN), Etsy (ETSY), Groupon (GRPN), Herbalife (HLF), Kellogg (K), Mobileye (MBLY), Mosaic (MOS), Myriad Genetics (MYGN), Office Depot (ODP), RetailMeNot (SALE), Silver Wheaton (SLW), TASER International (TASR), Tesla Motors (TSLA), U.S. Steel (X), WebMD (WBMD), and Zynga (ZNGA) are scheduled to step into the earnings spotlight.

Wednesday, 11/4

ADP's report on private-sector payrolls is due out on Wednesday, along with the international trade balance, the ISM services index, and weekly crude inventories. Fed Chair Janet Yellen is set to testify on bank regulation before the House Financial Services Committee, while Vice Chair Stanley Fischer will address the National Economists Club in Washington after the close of trading.

On the earnings front, we'll hear from 21st Century Fox (FOXA), 3D Systems (DDD), Allergan (AGN), Arcos Dorados (ARCO), Avon Products (AVP), Chesapeake Energy (CHK), Clean Harbors (CLH), Facebook (FB)FireEye (FEYE), GoDaddy (GDDY), King Digital Entertainment (KING), Lumber Liquidators (LL), Marathon Oil (MRO), Michael Kors (KORS), Qualcomm (QCOM), Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN), Shopify (SHOP), SodaStream (SODA), Time Warner (TWX), Transocean (RIG), Vonage (VG), Wendy's (WEN), and Whole Foods (WFM).

Thursday, 11/5

Thursday brings us weekly jobless claims, as well as third-quarter productivity and labor costs. A slew of regional Fed presidents will deliver speeches at various central bank conferences, including Philadelphia's Patrick Harker, New York's William Dudley, Chicago's Charles Evans, and Atlanta's Dennis Lockhart. Also slated to speak are Vice Chair Fischer and Fed Governor Daniel Tarullo.

Along with Dow member DIS, companies expected to report earnings include AstraZeneca (AZN), Clean Energy Fuels (CLNE), Con Edison (ED), Cyberark Software (CYBR), Dreamworks Animation (DWA), Duke Energy (DUK), HHGregg (HGG), Kraft Heinz (KHC), Melco Crown Entertainment (MPEL), Molson Coors Brewing (TAP), NVIDIA (NVDA), Orexigen Therapeutics (OREX), Pixelworks (PXLW), Quanta Services (PWR), Ralph Lauren (RL), SeaWorld Entertainment (SEAS), Shake Shack (SHAK), Silver Standard Resources (SSRI), Skyworks (SWKS), Symantec (SYMC), Take-Two Interactive Software (TTWO), TripAdvisor (TRIP), and Weight Watchers International (WTW).

Friday, 11/6

The week's marquee economic event takes place on Friday, when the Labor Department will release October's nonfarm payrolls, unemployment rate, hourly earnings, and average workweek. The Fed's monthly report on consumer credit is also due out. Rounding out the week's slate of central bank speeches are St. Louis Fed President James Bullard and Fed Governor Lael Brainard.

Earnings are relatively light, with reports from ArcelorMittal (MT), CIGNA (CI), and Humana (HUM) headlining.
