The Week Ahead: Blue Chips in the Crosshairs

Next week's calendar features earnings from several blue chips, including Intel Corporation (INTC), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM), and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)

Earnings from big-cap companies are the focus of next week's calendar, though the economic agenda is far from light. Among the blue-chip stocks reporting earnings are financial firms JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM), American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS); healthcare issues Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) and UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE:UNH); as well as tech bigwig Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) and major conglomerate General Electric Company (NYSE:GE).

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

Monday

  • There are no economic reports on Monday's docket. Pep Boys-Manny Moe and Jack (PBY) will tell all in the earnings confessional.

Tuesday

  • Retail sales, the producer price index, and business inventories will be released on Tuesday. Stepping up to the earnings plate will be Intel (INTC), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), JPMorgan Chase (JPM), CSX Corporation (CSX), Fastenal (FAST), and Wells Fargo (WFC).

Wednesday

  • Wednesday is poised to be a busy day on the economic front, with the Empire State manufacturing index, industrial production and capacity utilization, the National Association of Home Builders' (NAHB) housing market index, weekly crude inventories, and the Fed's Beige Book all due. Bank of America (BAC), Netflix (NFLX), Charles Schwab (SCHW), Delta Air Lines (DAL), PNC Financial Services Group (PNC), SanDisk (SNDK), and U.S. Bancorp (USB) are slated to report earnings.

Thursday

  • Housing starts, weekly jobless claims, and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing survey will be reported on Thursday. American Express (AXP), Goldman Sachs (GS), UnitedHealth Group (UNH), Citigroup (C), Blackstone Group (BX), Mattel (MAT), Philip Morris (PM), Schlumberger (SLB), and Sherwin-Williams (SHW) will each take their turns in the earnings limelight. Meanwhile, Etsy (NASDAQ:ETSY) is slated to go public.

Friday

  • The week closes out with the latest consumer price index and the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index. General Electric (GE), Honeywell International (HON), and Seagate Technology (STX) will unveil their quarterly results.
