The Week Ahead: Fed Minutes and Alcoa Inc. Earnings

The Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) meeting minutes -- slated for release on Wednesday -- are the centerpiece of next week's economic calendar. Additionally, Minneapolis Fed President Narayana Kocherlakota and Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker both have speaking engagements planned. Meanwhile, Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) will mark the unofficial start to first-quarter earnings season when it reports on Wednesday. Among the other companies reporting earnings are pharmacy chains Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE:RAD) and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NYSE:WBA), restaurant franchises Dave & Buster's Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ:PLAY) and Ruby Tuesday, Inc. (NYSE:RT), as well as wine purveyor Constellation Brands, Inc. (NYSE:STZ).

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

Monday

  • The week kicks off with the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) non-manufacturing index -- plus, traders will finally have a chance to react to the nonfarm payrolls report released on Good Friday. A. Schulman (SHLM) is the day's sole earnings reporter.

Tuesday

  • The Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) comes out on Tuesday, while Minneapolis Fed President Narayana Kocherlakota is slated to give a speech in North Dakota. Dave & Buster's (PLAY), Greenbrier (GBX), and Schnitzer Steel (SCHN) are scheduled to report earnings.

Wednesday

  • On Wednesday, the weekly crude inventories report and the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) meeting minutes are slated for release. Alcoa's (AA) report marks the unofficial start to first-quarter earnings season, while Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Family Dollar (FDO), Pier 1 Imports (PIR), and Rite Aid (RAD) are also set to announce quarterly results.

Thursday

  • Thursday's headline economic report is weekly jobless claims. Constellation Brands (STZ), Ruby Tuesday (RT), and Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) will step into the earnings confessional.

Friday

  • The Treasury budget comes out on Friday, along with import and export prices. Kocherlakota continues his speaking tour with a stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, while Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker will address a Florida audience. There are no notable earnings on the docket.
