It wasn't the end-of-week finish the Dow was hoping for, as the blue-chip index fell 272 points -- bringing its weekly loss to 3.2%. Across all 12 options exchanges, 6.7 million calls crossed, compared to 7.9 million puts. The day's put/call volume ratio closed at 1.18.

Call volume on Delta Air Lines, Inc. (NYSE:DAL) ran at nearly twice the expected rate, amid a big day for airline stocks. On the other hand, it was another tough day for gold stocks, although Yamana Gold Inc. (USA) (NYSE:AUY) calls changed hands at an accelerated clip.

VeriFone Systems Inc (NYSE:PAY) puts crossed at roughly four times the average, after the company offered up weaker-than-anticipated guidance. Meanwhile, with the stock still on the short-sale restricted list following yesterday's slide, Joy Global Inc. (NYSE:JOY) put volume ended four times higher than normal.
