Initial and continuing jobless claims due out today
Today the usual initial and continuing weekly jobless claims are scheduled for Thursday, along with the Chicago Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI).
There are no further public companies slated to release corporate earnings in 2021.
Looking ahead to tomorrow (New Year's Eve), there will be no economic data to report as we close out the 2021 trading year.
Is the stock market closed on New Year's Eve? Unusually, there is no stock market holiday observed for New Year's Day in 2022. With the first day of the year falling on a Saturday, standard practice would be to observe the holiday on the Friday ahead of the weekend. However, the U.S. stock markets will be open regular hours on New Year's Eve and the bond market will close early at 2 p.m. ET that day. Because New Year's Day is a holiday usually celebrated by both markets, trading activity is usually fairly light surrounding the holiday.
What stock market holidays will be observed in the first quarter of 2022? Without the normal New Year's Day holiday observance in Q1, there will be two stock market holidays in the first quarter. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be observed on Monday, January 17, and the stock market will be closed for the full day. Then, Presidents' Day (Washington's Birthday) will also result in a full-day stock market closure on Monday, February 21.
All economic dates listed here are tentative and subject to change.
