Fed Meeting, FAANG Earnings Set to Drive Stocks

A number of Dow stocks report earnings this week, including Exxon, Chevron, DuPont, and McDonald's

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting will kick off on Tuesday this week, as earnings reports continue to flood the docket. Quite a few Dow components -- including Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD), and Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) -- will report earnings, alongside FAANG stocks Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL), and Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB).

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

The week starts off on Monday, July 24, with existing home sales and Markit's flash composite purchasing managers index (PMI). Earnings are expected from Alphabet (GOOGL), Halliburton (HAL), Hasbro (HAS), Philips (PHG), Rambus (RMBS), Stanley Black & Decker (SWK), and VF Corp (VF).

Things pick up on Tuesday, July 25, when the two-day FOMC meeting begins. The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller home price index and the Conference Board's consumer confidence index will also hit the Street. Plenty of earnings are expected Tuesday, including 3M (MMM), Caterpillar (CAT), DuPont (DD), McDonald's (MCD), United Technologies (UTX), AK Steel (AKS), AT&T (T), Eli Lilly (LLY), Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), General Motors (GM), JetBlue Airways (JBLU), Texas Instruments (TXN), and United States Steel (X).

On Wednesday, July 26, the regularly scheduled crude inventories update and new home sales data are on the schedule. The week's headline economic event takes place at 2 p.m. ET, when the Fed announces its latest policy decision. A slew of companies will report earnings Wednesday, including Boeing (BA), Coca-Cola (KO), Facebook (FB), Anthem (ANTM), Corning (GLW), Ford Motor (F), NASDAQ (NDAQ), PayPal (PYPL), and Whole Foods Market (WFM).

Thursday, July 27, brings weekly jobless claims, international trade data, and durable goods orders to the table. Earnings are expected from Intel (INTC), Procter & Gamble (PG), Verizon Communications (VZ), Amazon.com (AMZN), Twitter (TWTR), Baidu (BIDU), Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY), Comcast (CMCSA), Electronic Arts (EA), Expedia (EXPE), Mastercard (MA), Mattel (MAT), Nokia (NOK), Raytheon (RTN), Sirius XM (SIRI), Southwest Airlines (LUV), Starbucks (SBUX), United Parcel Service (UPS), Western Digital (WDC), and Valero Energy (VLO). 

Friday, July 28, will end the week with the advance report on second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP), the University of Michigan consumer sentiment index, and the employment cost index. Minneapolis Fed Reserve Bank President Neel Kashkari is also scheduled to speak in Minnesota. Chevron (CVX), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Merck & Co (MRK), American Airlines (AAL), and Yandex (YNDX) will report earnings.
