The Week Ahead: Nonfarm Payrolls, Tesla Earnings Highlight Week

A week filled with speeches from regional Fed presidents will culminate with the nonfarm payrolls report for April

The juiciest portion of earnings season has passed, but there's still plenty more to go. Dow components Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) and Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) are both set to report next week, as are so-called "momentum stocks" Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY), Fitbit Inc (NYSE:FIT), and GoPro Inc (NASDAQ:GPRO). Traders will also digest results from Elon Musk's Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA).

Meanwhile, there's a bevy of economic news for Wall Street to process, including speeches from at least four regional Fed presidents. Perhaps most importantly, all eyes will be on Friday's nonfarm payrolls report for April, which could help determine when the central bank decides to raise interest rates.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

Monday, May 2

On Monday, the Markit purchasing managers manufacturing index (PMI), the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing index, and construction spending numbers will be released. Plus, Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart and San Francisco Fed President John Williams will speak. As for earnings, Cabot (CBT), Community Health (CYH), Denny's (DENN), Loews (L), and Sysco (SYY) will report.   

Tuesday, May 3

April auto sales data will be released on Tuesday, while Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester will speak in the morning. Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart will follow this up with a speech after the close. 

Companies reporting earnings include PFE, Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM), Avis Budget (CAR), CBS (CBS), Clorox (CLX), Cummins (CMI), CVS Health (CVS), Duke Energy (DUK), Estee Lauder (EL), ETSY, Fresh Del Monte (FDP), Glu Mobile (GLUU), GrubHub (GRUB), Halliburton (HAL), Hyatt Hotels (H), Illumina (ILMN)Molson Coors Brewing (TAP), Pitney Bowes (PBI), Sprint (S), Starwood Hotels (HOT), Western Union (WU), Valero Energy (VLO), and Zillow (ZG).

Wednesday, May 4

The economic calendar is busy on Wednesday. ADP's report on private-sector payrolls, international trade data, and productivity and labor costs will come out ahead of the bell. Later, factory orders, the ISM non-manufacturing index, and weekly crude inventories will be released. Minnesota Fed President Neel Kashkari will speak after the close. 

As for earnings, Allstate (ALL), Anheuser-Busch Inbev (BUD), bluebird bio (BLUE), Delphi Automotive (DLPH), FIT, GoDaddy (GDDY), Humana (HUM), InterActiveCorp (IAC), InterXion (INXN), Kate Spade (KATE), Kraft Heinz (KHC), Marathon Oil (MRO)MetLife (MET)Priceline (PCLN), Prudential (PRU), TASER International (TASR), TSLA, Time Warner (TWX), Transocean (RIG), TripAdvisor (TRIP), Weight Watchers (WTW), Whole Foods Market (WFM), Yamana Gold (AUY), and Zynga (ZNGA) will report. 

Thursday, May 5

Weekly jobless claims is the only notable economic report slated for Thursday. Earnings wise, MRK, 3D Systems (DDD), Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Alibaba (BABA), AMC Networks (AMCX), AmerisourceBergen (ABC), Avon Products (AVP), Chesapeake Energy (CHK), Clovis Oncology (CLVS), Cyberark Software (CYBR), Discovery Communications (DISCA), Dreamworks Animation (DWA), El Pollo Loco (LOCO), FireEye (FEYE), GPRO, Herbalife (HLF), Kellogg (K), MGM Resorts (MGM), Mobileye N.V. (MBLY), Motorola Solutions (MSI), News Corp (NWSA), Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN), SeaWorld (SEAS), Square (SQ), SunPower (SPWR), Tableau Software (DATA), TreeHouse Foods (THS), Windstream (WIN), and Yelp (YELP) will announce. 

Friday, May 6

The highly anticipated nonfarm payrolls report for April will be released on Friday. CIGNA (CI) and Gogo (GOGO) will report earnings.
