The Week Ahead: GDP, Housing, and Home Depot Earnings

A slew of retail and health-and-fitness names will step up to the earnings plate

The latest gross domestic product (GDP) estimate will punctuate a week dominated by housing data. Blue-chip Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) will step into the earnings confessional, along with a slew of other retail names, including Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY), Macy's, Inc. (NYSE:M), J C Penney Company Inc (NYSE:JCP), and Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT). A handful of health-and-fitness stocks will also be in the limelight next week, with Fitbit Inc (NYSE:FIT), Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE:HLF), NutriSystem Inc. (NASDAQ:NTRI), and Oprah's own Weight Watchers International, Inc. (NYSE:WTW) reporting.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates. 

Monday, 2/22

Markit's flash purchasing managers index (PMI) is on tap. Fitbit (FIT), Allergan (AGN), Dean Foods (DF), Motorola Solutions (MSI), Texas Roadhouse (TXRH), and Veeco Instruments (VECO) will report earnings.

Tuesday, 2/23

Existing home sales and the S&P/Case-Shiller home price index will be released, as well as the Conference Board's latest consumer confidence stats.

Home Depot (HD), Etsy (ETSY), First Solar (FSLR), Angie's List (ANGI), Avis Budget (CAR), BioCryst Pharmaceuticals (BCRX), Caesars Entertainment (CZR), Cracker Barrel (CBRL), Dreamworks Animation (DWA), Hecla Mining (HL), Jazz Pharmaceuticals (JAZZ), J.M. Smucker (SJM), Macy's (M), Office Depot (ODP), Papa John's (PZZA), and Toll Brothers (TOL) are among the companies stepping into the earnings confessional.

Wednesday, 2/24

New home sales data will be in focus Wednesday, as well as the regularly scheduled crude inventories report. Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker will speak ahead of the open, while St. Louis Fed President James Bullard will step up to the mic after the close.

Stepping up to the earnings plate are Chesapeake Energy (CHK), Salesforce.com (CRM), Transocean LTD (RIG), IMAX (IMAX), L Brands (LB), Lowe's (LOW), Mobileye NV (MBLY), NetEase (NTES), Target (TGT), TerraForm Power (TERP), TJX Companies (TJX), Vipshop (VIPS), and Whiting Petroleum (WLL).

Thursday, 2/25

Weekly jobless claims and January orders for durable goods will hit the Street. Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart will speak before the open, and San Francisco Fed President John Williams will speak at 12 p.m. ET.

On the earnings front, Baidu (BIDU), Herbalife (HLF), AMC Networks (AMCX), Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD), Autodesk (ADSK), Best Buy (BBY), Biomarin Pharmaceuticals (BMRN), Chico's FAS (CHS), Domino's Pizza (DPZ), Gap (GPS), Gogo (GOGO), Intuit (INTU), Kohl's (KSS), Kraft Heinz (KHC), NutriSystem (NTRI), Palo Alto Networks (PANW), Seadrill Ltd (SDRL), Splunk (SPLK), Wayfair (W), and Weight Watchers International (WTW) will report.

Friday, 2/26

The latest estimate on fourth-quarter GDP and January data on personal income and spending will be in focus, along with the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index.

J C Penney (JCP), Foot Locker (FL), Range Resources (RRC), and Sotheby's (BID) will round out the week's earnings reports.
