The Week Ahead: Yellen, Blue Chips Take Center Stage

Fed Chair Janet Yellen will present the central bank's semiannual monetary report to Congress

While the week ahead will be relatively light on economic reports (Friday notwithstanding), it will certainly be of interest to Fed watchers. Of note, Fed Chair Janet Yellen is scheduled to present the central bank's semiannual monetary report before Congress, while a pair of regional Fed presidents will also speak.

On the earnings front, another trio of blue chips will tell all, building on last week when Dow components Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM)Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK), and Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) took their turns in the confessional. In particular, The Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO)Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS), and Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) will report, as will social media stocks Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) and Yelp Inc (NYSE:YELP).

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates. 

Monday, 2/8

There are no notable economic reports scheduled for Monday. On the earnings front, Hasbro (HAS), Loews (L), and YELP will announce quarterly results.

Tuesday, 2/9

The lone highlight on Tuesday's docket is the Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS). KO, DIS, Akamai Technologies (AKAM), CVS Health (CVS), Goodyear Tire & Rubber (GT), Panera Bread (PNRA), SolarCity (SCTY), Spirit Airlines (SAVE), Viacom (VIAB), Wendy's (WEN), Western Union (WU), and Wyndham Worldwide (WYN) will report earnings. 

Wednesday, 2/10

The regularly scheduled crude inventories report is due out on Wednesday, as is the U.S. Treasury budget. Also, Fed Chair Janet Yellen is slated to present a semiannual monetary report before the House Financial Services Committee, while San Francisco Fed President John Williams will speak on the health of the economy.

Stepping up to the earnings plate are CSCO, Aramark (ARMK), Baidu (BIDU), Expedia (EXPE), Humana (HUM), Kinross Gold (KGC), LifeLock (LOCK), Mylan (MYL), O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY), Owen's Corning (OC), Pilgrim's Pride (PPC), Skechers (SKX), TWTR, Whole Foods Market (WFM), and Zynga (ZNGA). 

Thursday, 2/11

Out Thursday is the weekly jobless claims report. Plus, Yellen will continue her tour of Capitol Hill, presenting the Fed's monetary report to the Senate Banking Committee. Among the companies reporting earnings are Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Advance Auto Parts (AAP), Avon Products (AVP), CBS Corporation (CBS), Cyberark Software (CYBR), FireEye (FEYE), Groupon (GRPN), Kellogg (K), Molson Coors Brewing (TAP), Monster Worldwide (MWW), Nokia (NOK)Pandora Media (P), PepsiCo (PEP), TripAdvisor (TRIP), and Zillow (Z).

Friday, 2/12

It will be a busy end to the week, with retail sales, import and export prices, business inventories, and the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey each due out. Also, Dallas Fed President Rob Kaplan will speak. Red Robin Gourmet Burgers (RRGB) will close out the earnings lineup.
