The Week Ahead: All Eyes on Payrolls

The Labor Department will release its monthly jobs numbers ahead of the open on Friday

With last week's Fed meeting hinting that central bankers are keeping a close eye on the strength of the economy, speculators -- and Fed officials -- will be paying particular attention to this week's batch of jobs data, which culminates with Friday's nonfarm payrolls report.

Additionally, although earnings season has already served up big results from the likes of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), there are plenty of notable names still left to report. Tech titan Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) will take its place in the earnings spotlight Monday evening, while camera concern GoPro Inc (NASDAQ:GPRO) will report Wednesday evening. What's more, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc.'s (NYSE:CMG) earnings should garner some attention, after the recent E. coli scandal sent the stock spiraling.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates. 

Monday, 2/1

The week commences with the latest data on personal income and outlays, Markit's purchasing managers manufacturing index (PMI), the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) manufacturing index, and construction spending numbers.

GOOGL, Aetna (AET), Anadarko Petroleum (APC), Mattel (MAT), Rent-a-Center (RCII), Sohu.com (SOHU), and Sysco (SYY) will enter the earnings spotlight. 

Tuesday, 2/2

January auto sales data hits the Street on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Kansas City Fed President Esther George is scheduled to speak in the afternoon. 

Exxon Mobil (XOM), Pfizer (PFE), Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM), CMG, Dow Chemical (DOW), Edwards Lifesciences (EW), Gilead Sciences (GILD), Illumina (ILMN), LyondellBasell (LYB), Michael Kors (KORS), Myriad Genetics (MYGN), Pitney Bowes (PBI), Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL), Sirius XM (SIRI), United Parcel Service (UPS), and Yahoo! (YHOO) are on tap to report earnings. Elsewhere, Beazer Homes (BZH) and Oshkosh (OSK) will host their annual shareholders meeting.

Wednesday, 2/3

Due out Wednesday is the Automatic Data Processing (ADP) employment report, the ISM non-manufacturing index, and weekly crude inventories.

On the earnings front, Merck (MRK), ADP, Allstate (ALL), Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD), CBOE Holdings (CBOE), Comcast (CMCSA), General Motors (GM), Glu Mobile (GLUU), GPRO, International Paper (IP), Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Metlife (MET), Microchip Technology (MCHP), Mondelez International (MDLZ), Shutterfly (SFLY), Take-Two Interactive Software (TTWO), and Yum! Brands (YUM) are all scheduled to report. Visa (V), meanwhile, will host its annual shareholders meeting.

Thursday, 2/4

Thursday's docket includes weekly jobless claims, productivity and labor cost data, and factory orders. In the afternoon, Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester is slated to take the podium.

athenahealth (ATHN), AmerisourceBergen (ABC), BZH, Boston Scientific (BSX), Cigna (CI), Clorox (CLX), ConocoPhillips (COP), Deckers Outdoor (DECK), Dunkin’ Brands Group (DNKN), GrubHub (GRUB), Hartford Financial Services Group (HIG), Level 3 Communications (LVLT), LinkedIn (LNKD), Lions Gate Entertainment (LGF), and Ralph Lauren (RL) will tell all in the earnings confessional. Rite Aid (RAD) will hold an extraordinary shareholders meeting.

Friday, 2/5

The week rounds out with the Labor Department's all-important nonfarm payrolls report, along with international trade data.

CME Group (CME), Estee Lauder (EL), Tyson Foods (TSN), USG Corporation (USG), and Weyerhaeuser (WY) will round out the week's lineup of earnings reports, while Corning (GLW) will host its annual investor day.
