After two holiday-shortened weeks, jobs data, Fed minutes, and the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) should make some noise next week. Automakers could also be in the spotlight -- both at the CES and after December sales roll in -- and the earnings calendar will start to warm up again.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

Monday, 1/4

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing index and data on construction spending will hit the Street on Monday. There are no notable earnings on tap.

Tuesday, 1/5

Automakers will be in focus Tuesday, with December auto sales slated for release. Sonic Corp (SONC) will step up to the earnings plate.

Wednesday, 1/6

The Automatic Data Processing (ADP) employment report, factory orders, the ISM non-manufacturing index, and the regularly scheduled crude inventories report will be in focus. However, the highlight will be the minutes from the December Fed meeting.

Monsanto (MON) will report earnings and Costco Wholesale (COST) will release its December sales figures. Meanwhile, the CES will ramp up in Las Vegas, with Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) CEO Reed Hastings and General Motors Company (GM) CEO Mary Barra among the keynote speakers. It's also rumored that Ford Motor Company (F) -- which recently teamed up with Alphabet (GOOGL) on self-driving car technology -- and other automakers could make a splash.

Thursday, 1/7

Weekly jobless claims will hit the Street, and Chicago Fed President Charles Evans will give a speech on the economy at 2:15 p.m. ET.

Barracuda Networks (CUDA), Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Constellation Brands (STZ), Finish Line (FINL), KB Home (KBH), Ruby Tuesday (RT), Schnitzer Steel (SCHN), The Container Store (TCS), and Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) will report earnings.

Friday, 1/8

The employment theme is punctuated by the closely watched nonfarm payrolls report, and traders will also digest data on wholesale inventories and consumer credit. San Francisco Fed President John Williams and Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker will speak, and Acuity Brands (AYI) will unveil its quarterly report.
