The Week Ahead: Blue-Chip Earnings, Stock Splits, and Yellen

Fed Chair Janet Yellen will take the mic in Washington, D.C., next week, but that isn't the only news that will move the market. Traders will undoubtedly watch the latest headlines out of Greece and China, a couple of notable stock splits, and an economic calendar featuring retail sales, jobless claims, and the inflation data.

Big names will follow Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) into the earnings confessional, as Dow components Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC)Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM), Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) are among the companies set to report earnings.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

Monday, July 13

Monday's news slate is light, with the Treasury budget the only report of note. There are no notable earnings reports on Monday, but Kroger Co. (KR) shares will split after the bell.

Tuesday, July 14

Retail sales for the month of June will be released ahead of the bell, as will import and export prices. This data will be followed by the May business inventories report.

As for companies in the news, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) will be joined by fellow Dow member JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM) in the earnings spotlight. Other notable names reporting earnings include Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC) and YUM! Brands, Inc. (YUM). Watch for a post-close stock split from Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) and Applied Materials, Inc. (AMAT) will hold its analyst day.

Wednesday, July 15

The June PPI and industrial production figures will be released, along with the regularly scheduled crude inventories report and the Fed's Beige Book. Chicago Fed President Loretta Mester and San Francisco Fed President John Williams will give speeches, but all eyes will be on Fed Chair Janet Yellen, kicking off a two-day testimony on Capitol Hill.

Turning to earnings, Intel Corporation (INTC), Bank of America Corp. (BAC), NFLX, PNC Financial Services Group (PNC), Las Vegas Sands Corp (LVS), and Delta Air Lines, Inc. (DAL) will report. General Mills (GIS) will hold its investor day. Perhaps the biggest news on Wednesday is that it is Amazon.com (AMZN) Prime Day!!

Thursday, July 16

Thursday morning starts with the release of jobless claims data and the Philadelphia Fed's business outlook survey. The NAHB housing market index will hit after the open, and Yellen will wrap up her semi-annual testimony before Congress.

Dow components Goldman Sachs (GS) and UnitedHealth Group (UNH) will announce their quarterly earnings, as will Citigroup (C), Google Inc (GOOGL), eBay Inc. (EBAY), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Mattel (MAT), Philip Morris International (PM), Schlumberger (SLB), and KeyCorp (KEY). In other stock news, Ollie's Bargain Outlet Holdings (OLLI) is expected to have its initial public offering (IPO).

Friday, July 17

The news week wraps up with the consumer price index (CPI), core CPI, housing starts data, and the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index. While several companies are releasing earnings -- including Honeywell (HON) --  all eyes will be on General Electric (GE).
