The 20 stocks listed in the table below have attracted the highest total options volume during the past 10 trading days. Names highlighted are new to the list since the last time the study was run, and data is courtesy of Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White. One name of notable interest this afternoon is Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB).
Another day, another new record high for Facebook Inc, which earlier tagged the $65.06 mark for the first time ever. Option players are responding to the notable milestone in favorable fashion, and have scooped up 166,000 calls thus far, compared to around 44,000 puts. By far, the two most active strikes are the February 55 and June 65 calls, and looking deeper into the data suggests the majority of the action may be at the hands of one speculator upping the bullish ante on the outperforming equity.
Shortly after the opening bell rang this morning, two symmetrical blocks of 45,986 February 55 and June 55 calls simultaneously changed hands at the International Securities Exchange (ISE). The former crossed at the bid price of $9.65, suggesting it was sold, while the latter went off at the ask price of $6.30, indicating it was bought. Data from the ISE via Trade-Alert confirms the closing and opening of the positions, respectively. If indeed, this is representative of the speculator rolling her long call position up and out, it reflects her opinion that FB will continue to march higher over the next four-plus months.
As noted, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has been on a tear over the past 52 weeks, with the shares up roughly 137% to linger near $64.87. More recently, the equity has traded north of its 20-week moving average since July 2013, and a strong bounce off this rising trendline last week helped FB tag today's all-time peak.
