One of the hottest names in technology outside of Apple (AAPL) stepped up to the earnings plate after the close tonight, as VMware (VMW: sentiment, chart, options) reported a third-quarter profit of $65 million, or 18 cents per share, on revenue of $358 million. Excluding charges and one-time expenses, VMware would have earned $85 million, or 23 cents per share, blowing past the Street's forecast of 17 cents per share on $334 million in revenue.

With everyone focusing on VMW's parent company, EMC Corp. (EMC), the virtual software company could finally garner some much deserved additional attention in tomorrow's trading. Since its initial public offering, VMW has surged more than 100%. The shares appear to be trading near the 107 level in after-hours trading, but only tomorrow will tell whether or not VMW will finally best the 110 level that has plagued the shares on a short-term basis.
