Disappointing domestic earnings reports and Chinese manufacturing data are weighing on U.S. stock futures this morning. In company news, here are some stocks to watch today:

  • Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has agreed to buy messaging start-up WhatsApp for $16 billion in cash and stock. "The primary thing we focused on was how healthy this network is and the pace at which it was growing," FB Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman said, justifying the price paid for the chat platform. (The New York Times)

  • Activist investor Nelson Peltz sent a nearly 40-page letter to PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE:PEP), urging the beverage giant to spin off its soda business in order to focus strictly on its portfolio of snacks, which includes Cheetos, Doritos, and other valuable brands. Peltz said his firm, Trian Fund Management, will begin drumming up shareholder support to push for the split. (Reuters)

  • Safeway Inc. (NYSE:SWY) is considering a company sale amid growing competition, CEO Robert Edwards announced, without elaborating on details. This is just the latest development for the struggling grocer, which recently pulled out of the Chicago market, and has been selling off non-core business units. (Reuters)

  • Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) said it is preparing to expand its ultra-fast Internet network to 34 cities in nine metropolitan areas throughout the country. Google Fiber offers connection speeds that can reach 1GB per second -- about 100 times faster than typical high-speed networks. (CNNMoney)

  • Also, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT), DIRECTV (NASDAQ:DTV), Hormel Foods Corp (NYSE:HRL), SWY, and Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) reported quarterly earnings. (Bloomberg Businessweek; Bloomberg; Reuters; CNNMoney)

  • Finally, for anyone who's ever felt the need to ingest Mexican food at a breakneck pace, Matt Stonie has shown us "how to do it right." The professional eater posted a video of himself at a Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE:CMG) location, eating four burritos in three minutes. (Consumerist)
